How to Use the Color Black in Your Interior Design

When done well, black can add a sense of luxury and sophistication to your interior design. It can also add drama and mystery or create a dark, moody feel. At National Window Fashions, we can help you balance the black in your home by incorporating black window trim and shades and making your interiors pop. Here are some tips for how to use black correctly in your interior design.

Hunter Douglas black window shades in a home near Seminole, FL

Choose a Focal Point with Your Color

One of the best ways to incorporate black is to choose a focal point, like black window shades or custom drapery. You could consider Hunter Douglas Duette® Cellular Shades in black onyx or Vignette® Roman Shades in dark sable. These pull black into your room in an elegant, fitted way. You could also consider a styled couch or painting the bottom of the kitchen island black.

Once you’ve chosen the focal point, you must add at least three black things throughout the room to balance the colors. Consider:

  • A black shelf
  • Black patterned throw pillows
  • Black photo frames
  • Black Ottoman
  • A lamp with a black base or a lamp with a black shade
  • Black vases
  • Black drinking glasses

Create an Accent Wall in Black

Select a wall without a window and paint it black or add black wallpaper. Then, layer the wall. Add a large piece of furniture in front of it, like a couch, headboard, fireplace mantel, China cabinet, or TV. These things stand out while also decreasing the effect of too much black, making the black wall look particularly sophisticated.

You also want to use black in other areas of the room. For instance, consider black trim on windows or Parkland® Wood Blinds in nightingale on a white wall. If you add custom drapery, make sure it’s in a color used in other places in the room.

Go All Black with Custom Window Treatments & Decor

It’s best to create a moody, edgy environment by using different shades of black around your room. For instance, incorporate light black furniture in a room you’ve painted all black or have a dark black accent wall. You could also select black window shades, like Provenance® Woven Wood Shades in charcoal, adding black to your window and part of one wall and casting a darker shadow on the ground. A black rug with some white or gray design adds to the mood without the color becoming overwhelming.
